Gift Fiscal Year
A consecutive 12-month period used by the University to plan and report finances. The Fiscal Year for GW begins July 1st of a given year and continues through June 30th of the following year.
Gift Officer
The name of a staff member in DAR who is a frontline fundraiser. See detailed definitions below: Portfolio Overview - The name of the staff member that is assigned to the prospect. Proposals - The name of the staff member that is assigned to the proposal. Contacts - The name of the staff member who authored the contact report, received credit for the contact report, is currently the Prospect Manager, or was the Prospect Manager at the time of the contact.
Gift Officer Unit
The school, unit, or central office for which the gift officer is employed.
Gifts
A transfer of money or property to an individual without receiving something or equal or greater value in return.

Gift Subcategory
Commitments include:
Bequest Intention/Testamentary Pledges: Provisions in a will, trust, or other testamentary legal document providing a gift to the University pursuant to applicable state or provincial law.
Formal Pledge: A documented commitment to make future gifts to the University. Payroll Deduction Pledge: A formal pledge received by a University Faculty/Staff member where payments are withdrawn directly from their paycheck on a pre-defined schedule.
Sponsored Research Pledge: A commitment to donate money to the university in order to fund a dedicated research program.
Intention to Give: An offer by a donor to make a future payment through their donor-advised fund (DAF) or another third-party vehicle. Donors may not make commitments that will be fulfilled by these third parties (according to IRS regulations).
Charitable Lead Annuity Trust: Provisions in an irrevocable trust designed to provide financial support to GW for a period of time, with the remaining assets eventually going to family members or other beneficiaries.
Outright Gifts:
Gift: A contribution received by the University.
Matching Gift: Matching gift programs are a benefit offered by some employers that will match an employees charitable contribution by a predetermined ratio. Once the University receives and documents the employees contribution, the employer will fulfill their commitment based on their benefits package. The employer will receive legal credit for the contribution, and the employee will receive recognition(soft) credit.
Pension Protection Act Gift: A specialized gift to the University, which allows donors to fund their gift from a Traditional or Roth IRA without tax liability.
Planned Gifts:
Planned Gift: A commitment received where the benefits to the University will not be realized until some point in the future. Examples of these complex gifts are real estate, life insurance, charitable remainder trusts, and gift annuities. Realized Bequest Gift: The cash fulfillment of a will or other estate plan.
Commitment Payments:
Pledge Payment: Payments associated with a formal pledge.
Sponsored Research Payment: The cash fulfillment of an existing sponsored research pledge. Intention Honored: Payments associated with an intention to give stated by a donor previously. Membership Gifts: The GW Museum and The Textile Museum offer benefits to constituents at different membership levels.
