Tableau Cloud Migration
Why migrate?
Business Intelligence Services is happy to share that Tableau | GW Insight, one of the BI Tools you frequently use, is undergoing an exciting technical upgrade— it’s moving to the cloud! Starting in January 2024, this migration to Tableau’s software-as-a-service (Saas) solution will gradually transition all currently used dashboards to their new home in Tableau Cloud.
This strategic move aligns with GWIT’s long-term strategy to modernize and simplify IT services. Transitioning to Tableau Cloud not only lowers maintenance costs but also minimizes GW’s environmental impact by reducing our carbon footprint and moving GW towards a more efficient and consumption-based model.
In addition, Tableau Cloud will:
- Allow GW to take advantage of Tableau’s existing advanced features and new ones as they become available.
- Give GW a modern analytics environment that is trusted, secure, compliant, and always available.
- Eliminate administrative tasks for the BI team, which means we can focus on the data analysis needs of users.
How to Access?
- Login to Tableau Cloud/Tableau Online https://sso.online.tableau.com
- Type in your complete GWU email address, e.g., [email protected]
- Enter your gwu email as the UserID and your SSO password. Approve sign in request through your Authentication App.
If you see this error message, submit a ticket.
Please submit a ticket to Business Intelligence Services so we can trouble shoot for you! We are in the process of allocating seats for Tableau Cloud and we may not have gotten to your group yet!
Post Migration - Helpful Tips and Tricks
The following Tableau features will not automatically migrate with the dashboards. Here are instructions for you to re-create them in Tableau Cloud:
- Subscriptions

Setting up email subscriptions in Tableau Cloud is a similar process to what you do now. More details.
- Custom Views

A custom view is a capture of your selections and filters. You can create custom views in Tableau Cloud, however, we are not able to share them with others at this time. More details.
- Favorites

You will need to reselect your favorites in Tableau Cloud. More details.
- URL Actions

You will need to update URL links that embed your dashboard to a GWU webpage. More details.
